eBay Money Back Guarantee: The Complete Refund Playbook (2026)

eBay MBG covers items not received, damaged, or not as described within 30 days. Here is how to file, escalate when the seller does not respond, and what to do when MBG itself fails.

TL;DR

eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers most transactions on eBay.com for 30 calendar days from the estimated or actual delivery date. If your item does not arrive, arrives damaged, does not match the listing, or the seller does not honor their stated return policy, you are entitled to a full refund including original shipping. The fastest path: open a request in Purchase History, give the seller 3 business days to resolve, then escalate to eBay. eBay typically responds within 48 hours once they step in.

What eBay Money Back Guarantee actually covers

eBay MBG applies in four situations, all of which trigger the same refund guarantee:

  • Item not received: package does not arrive within the estimated delivery window, or tracking cannot confirm delivery to the address shown in Order details
  • Item not as described: what arrives differs from the listing (wrong item, materially different condition, counterfeit, missing parts, etc.)
  • Damaged on arrival: item arrives broken, defective, or unusable
  • Seller does not honor their return policy: the seller refuses a valid return that their own listing promised

A fifth, more recent guarantee — eBay Authenticity Guarantee — covers luxury items (watches, sneakers, handbags) verified by a third-party authenticator before shipping. Authenticity Guarantee purchases are also covered by MBG, with stricter rules on returns.

Excluded items: vehicles, real estate, digital content, NFTs combined with physical items, services, classified ads, and travel tickets. Most consumer electronics, apparel, home goods, and small appliances are fully covered.

The 30-day window — exactly when it starts

The clock starts on the latest of these two dates:

  • The estimated delivery date (the right-most date in the delivery range shown at checkout)
  • The actual delivery date (the date tracking confirms delivery, or the date you collected the item)

You have 30 calendar days from that date to report the problem. After 30 days, you lose MBG coverage and can only fall back on the seller's individual return policy.

Tip: if you cannot remember the exact date, open your Purchase History and look at the order — eBay shows a countdown to "Request deadline" that is tied to the MBG window.

Step-by-step: filing an MBG claim that wins

Step 1: Check the delivery status before opening anything

In Purchase History, find the order. eBay shows the latest tracking scan. Two scenarios:

  • Tracking still updating: wait 1-2 more days. Packages that are "in transit" rarely need a claim.
  • Tracking shows delivered, but you do not have the package: check with neighbors, building reception, and around the property. Porch piracy is more common than package loss; the screenshot for your case will be much stronger.

Step 2: Open a "I did not receive it" or "Return this item" request

From Purchase History, click More actions next to the order, then choose one of:

  • I didn't receive it — for missing packages
  • Return this item — for damaged, not as described, or defective items

For returns, choose the most accurate sub-reason ("Arrived damaged", "Not as described", etc.). eBay's first-pass routing uses this to match the request to the right team.

Step 3: Give the seller 3 business days to respond

When you submit, eBay notifies the seller first. The seller has 3 business days to:

  • Issue a full or partial refund
  • Provide a delivery update (for missing items)
  • Offer a replacement
  • Reach out to resolve the issue

If the seller responds and the resolution is acceptable, you are done. Most low-value items under $50 are refunded by sellers the same day to avoid defect counts on their seller dashboard.

Step 4: Escalate to eBay

If the seller does not respond within 3 business days, or their resolution is unacceptable, escalate. Back in Purchase History:

  • Find the open request
  • Click See request details
  • Select Ask eBay to step in and help
  • Confirm

eBay will respond within 48 hours once they have stepped in. They will contact the seller for proof of delivery or return shipping. If the seller cannot provide it, eBay issues a refund.

Step 5: Don't close the request for 21 business days

After you escalate, eBay keeps the case open for 21 business days. Do not close it early. If the package turns up the next day, you can withdraw the request, but if you close it manually, you cannot reopen it.

Refund timelines by payment method

| Method | Typical timeline | |---|---| | eBay Bucks / eBay credit | Immediate (appears in your balance) | | PayPal | 3-5 business days | | Credit card | 5-10 business days | | Debit card | 5-10 business days | | Apple Pay / Google Pay | 3-5 business days | | Bank wire (rare for eBay) | 7-14 business days |

3 real MBG case studies (with outcomes)

These are simplified versions of recent public posts. The patterns hold across hundreds of similar cases reported in 2025-2026.

Case A: $89 leather jacket, "all sales final"

r/eBay user posted on Apr 12, 2026: they bought a used leather jacket, the listing said "all sales final, no returns". The jacket arrived with the lining torn out of the sleeve. The seller refused the return pointing at the no-return policy.

Filing path: The buyer opened a return request through "Item not as described" (not "I changed my mind"). Seller declined within 24 hours. Buyer escalated to eBay.

Outcome: eBay refunded $89 within 5 business days, AND the seller received a defect on their seller dashboard for refusing a valid SNAD claim. "All sales final" only applies to buyer's remorse, never to a misrepresentation in the listing.

Case B: $34 wig, SNAD (significantly not as described)

Trustpilot review posted Feb 8, 2026 ("@mark_chicago"): they ordered a 22-inch curly wig, received a 14-inch straight wig in the wrong color. Photos showed the dramatic difference.

Filing path: Buyer opened "Return this item" with sub-reason "Not as described" and attached 5 photos. Seller offered 20% partial refund to keep the item. Buyer declined and escalated.

Outcome: eBay approved full $34 refund, no return required because the item value was below the seller's return shipping cost. Refund issued via PayPal in 4 days.

Case C: $250 vintage SNES console, seller disappeared

r/Flipping thread from May 22, 2026: buyer paid for a vintage Super Nintendo console with original box. Tracking showed delivered, but the package was never received. Seller stopped responding to messages after day 2.

Filing path: Buyer waited 30 calendar days (the MBG window), filed "Item not received". Seller did not respond. Auto-escalated to eBay. eBay contacted seller, no response. eBay refunded full $250 + original $15 shipping.

Outcome: full refund, seller account eventually suspended for "defect rate above threshold" (4 unresolved MBG cases in 60 days). Buyer's money-back was processed via original credit card in 7 business days.

When eBay MBG fails: 3 escape routes

In rare cases where eBay sides with the seller or the MBG window has closed, you still have options.

Option 1: PayPal Buyer Protection

If you paid via PayPal, you can file a dispute directly with PayPal within 180 days of the transaction. PayPal's investigation is independent of eBay. The relevant categories are "Item not received" and "Significantly not as described".

PayPal typically sides with the buyer when:

  • Tracking shows delivered but the buyer swears they did not receive
  • The item was clearly different from the listing
  • The seller stopped responding

Option 2: Credit card chargeback

If you paid with a credit card, you can dispute the charge through your card issuer. The window varies by issuer, but US federal law under the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the billing statement date to dispute.

Use the following reason codes when filing:

  • 4855 — "Goods or services not provided" (most common)
  • 4837 — "No cardholder authorization" (if the card was used without your permission)
  • 4863 — "Cardholder does not recognize the transaction"

Provide eBay's MBG denial email as part of your evidence. Issuers generally side with cardholders for chargebacks under $500.

Option 3: Small claims court (for higher-value items)

For amounts over the small claims limit in your state (typically $2,500-$10,000), small claims court is a viable last resort. eBay sellers are required to provide their legal name and address under the eBay User Agreement, which makes service of process straightforward. Filing fees are usually $30-$75.

Common mistakes that cost buyers their MBG claim

  • Filing a "I changed my mind" return instead of "Item not as described". The first reason explicitly excludes MBG coverage. The second does not.
  • Closing a request too early. eBay keeps cases open for 21 business days; closing manually forfeits your right to escalation.
  • Failing to communicate with the seller first. eBay asks whether you tried to resolve it. A blank "no" makes your claim weaker.
  • Asking for partial refund when MBG covers full refund. Many buyers ask for 50% thinking they will negotiate. eBay awards what the policy provides — asking low doesn't help.
  • Ignoring eBay's evidence requests. Once eBay steps in, they may ask for additional documentation within 7 days. Missing the deadline results in automatic seller win.

Tips specific to eBay in 2026

  • Save every eBay Message screenshot. If your case escalates, eBay reviews the message history. Forwarding emails do not count.
  • Use the original payment method for refunds. eBay does not refund to a different card. If the original card is closed, the issuer routes the refund to a replacement card or check.
  • eBay returns can now be initiated up to 30 days from delivery for most categories — this was extended from the previous 14-day window in late 2025.
  • For SNAD claims, attach photos of the actual item and screenshots of the listing. The clearer the difference, the faster the approval.
  • For damaged items, photograph in the original packaging. eBay's damaged-in-transit claims require the shipping label to be visible.
